Winning this award highlights the success of the collective effort and close technical collaboration between the studios that designed the project, Flexo Arquitectura and Addenda Architects, and the construction teams from Romero Polo and VORACYS responsible for building it. The completion of this urban infrastructure provides the city of Barcelona with a public space of the highest architectural quality, establishing itself as a rigorously executed work that will endure over time at the service of the community.

As part of its commitment to social innovation, Romero Polo collaborates on technology projects applied to healthcare. A notable example is the funding, which began in late 2023, of a virtual reality tool developed in partnership with IRBLleida, Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital and the University of Lleida. This immersive technology, which recreates natural environments within the hospital itself, is designed to combat stress and burnout amongst future healthcare professionals, opening up new avenues for workplace wellbeing in the sector.

As a family-run business with over 40 years’ experience, Romero Polo integrates these initiatives into its Corporate Social Responsibility policy. With this agreement, the company reaffirms its commitment to channelling part of its activities towards the wellbeing of the Lleida community, actively supporting organisations that lead the way in innovation and scientific research in the province.

On one hand, Romero Polo’s involvement takes the form of the exhibition organised by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). This initiative, centred on the present and the immediate future, explores the criteria, tools and methodologies being used to develop new solutions for metropolitan public space. The exhibition illustrates the transformation of the region to tackle climate change, ensure sustainable mobility and restore natural and cultural heritage.

On the other hand, the company is sponsoring “Atles Re-edificatòria”, an exhibition curated by Alexandra Laudo and the architect and photographer Adrià Goula, which opened on 19 June at the Alfarràs Palace, at the foot of the Horta Labyrinth. Forming part of the programme promoted by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation and Barcelona City Council, this exhibition fosters an innovative dialogue between large-format photographs depicting iconic regeneration projects in Barcelona and works by renowned contemporary artists, exploring the shared languages between architectural practice and art.

Through these initiatives, Romero Polo reaffirms its commitment to contributing social and cultural value to the region, whilst participating in the major debates on the transformation and sustainability of the cities of the future.

From a construction perspective, the building stands out for its technical solutions, which ensure its safety, design and, above all, its educational function. As it is a music school, the interior will feature special wall cladding designed to absorb sound, preventing echoes and ensuring perfect acoustics in the classrooms. Structurally, deep foundations will be laid using buried piles to ensure maximum stability on the site, special underfloor insulation will be installed to protect against damp, and a concrete roof with a unique geometric design will be constructed. Externally, the centre will stand out for its exposed brick façades with modern curved shapes. In addition, Romero Polo’s work will include the development of the surrounding area, paving the footpaths, installing benches and handrails, and constructing a wall of large rocks to aesthetically address the uneven ground. With this project, the company reaffirms its commitment to creating public spaces that bring real and immediate value to society.

The project stands out for its scale and fundamental strategic importance to the central regions, as it represents the final piece that completes the Eix del Lluçanès. This road corridor, over 30 kilometres long, has successfully and efficiently linked the area between Berguedà and Osona. This recognition attests to the rigour, perseverance and commitment of the teams that have made this project possible, which improves mobility, generates new socio-economic opportunities and directly enhances the quality of life for people in the region.

The company’s CEO, Patricia Romero, spoke as a panellist at the round-table discussion specifically dedicated to the Lleida business ecosystem. During her presentation, she shared the discussion with other economic leaders from the province, including Carles Camí, founder of the Monlau Group and the Escola Mirasan; Tomàs Cusiné, president of the Castell del Remei winery; and Dolors Puyol, CEO of the Premier Pigs group. During the session, the challenges of globalisation, the resilience of local firms and the importance of regional roots in generating a positive socio-economic impact were analysed.

During the round-table discussions, Patricia Romero set out a clear roadmap for ensuring the sustainable growth and future of organisations in a complex environment, emphasising that business success today inevitably depends on leadership based on emotional intelligence, empathy, humanity and a firm commitment to quality, diversification and prudent, sound growth. She also emphasised that retaining talent and showing a firm commitment to the people involved in the project is an indispensable pillar, concluding that the key to Lleida’s economic fabric lies in companies’ ability to define the future they want – an aspect which the Encuentros demonstrate year after year that Lleida is able to achieve successfully.

The event was also attended by prominent figures from the institutional sphere, such as the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Salvador Illa; the Head of the Government of Andorra, Xavier Espot; the former High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell; the former Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi; the Mayor of Lleida, Fèlix Larrosa; the Government’s Deputy Delegate in Lleida, José Crespín; and the President of the Lleida Provincial Council, Joan Talarn. The project stands out for its large storage capacity, reaching 25,000 cubic metres, the equivalent of ten Olympic-sized swimming pools, which ensures a continuous, autonomous 24-hour supply in the event of any technical incident or scheduled outage for maintenance work on the main network. Despite the facility’s large scale, the project has adhered to strict criteria of sustainability and landscape integration, minimising the visual impact on the surroundings through the creation of green spaces and the construction of dry stone embankments.

This new facility will provide a direct and immediate benefit to the public and the industrial sector, strengthening the water supply to key towns such as Vila-seca, Salou, Reus, Cambrils and Mont-roig del Camp, as well as providing vital support for the southern petrochemical sector. With the completion of this project, Romero Polo reaffirms its long-standing commitment to engineering and the construction of essential infrastructure that is more sustainable and better equipped to meet the challenges of the future.

Construction of this facility, covering an area of nearly 7,000 square metres, continues to progress; a space that will be entirely dedicated to sport and the wellbeing of the public. The project, promoted by Barcelona d’Infraestructures Municipals (BIMSA) and designed by the firm AIA Barcelona, includes new swimming pools, fitness areas, rooms for group activities and communal spaces designed to become a community hub. This initiative represents a significant improvement for the neighbourhood’s well-being and reinforces the commitment to providing the city’s neighbourhoods with modern, accessible and high-quality public infrastructure.

The General Direction of Roads of the Ministry of Transport has officially proposed the joint venture formed by Sacyr and Papsa to carry out the works on the Jaca bypass, in the province of Huesca. This milestone officially confirms the award of what is positioned as the largest road contract of the year promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

The project involves the construction of a new section of motorway approximately 8 kilometres long, specifically designed to link the A-21 and the A-23, creating an alternative route to the Ebro corridor and diverting long-distance traffic that currently passes through the town centre. This major infrastructure project will help to significantly reduce journey times and ease congestion in the town centre of Jaca by avoiding speed-restricted sections and traffic-light junctions. The Ministry’s commitment sets the start of on-site works for next September, with the infrastructure expected to be fully completed by the end of 2031. With this contract award, Papsa consolidates its leadership in the civil engineering sector and in major transport infrastructure projects across the country.

The holding of this symposium coincides with a key moment for the city, following the City Council’s award of the new contract for the renewal and maintenance of public lighting to the LleidaLlum joint venture, formed by Romero Polo and Edison Next, for the next twelve years. This project builds on the management carried out by the joint venture over the last decade, a period during which 24,711 light points were already replaced, generating significant energy and cost savings. The new phase of the service involves the replacement of 14,545 streetlights with LED technology, the installation of 200 multisensors, 25 solar-powered streetlights and a remote control system to optimise management and reduce light pollution.
