The project stands out for its large storage capacity, reaching 25,000 cubic metres, the equivalent of ten Olympic-sized swimming pools, which ensures a continuous, autonomous 24-hour supply in the event of any technical incident or scheduled outage for maintenance work on the main network. Despite the facility’s large scale, the project has adhered to strict criteria of sustainability and landscape integration, minimising the visual impact on the surroundings through the creation of green spaces and the construction of dry stone embankments.

This new facility will provide a direct and immediate benefit to the public and the industrial sector, strengthening the water supply to key towns such as Vila-seca, Salou, Reus, Cambrils and Mont-roig del Camp, as well as providing vital support for the southern petrochemical sector. Construction of this facility, covering an area of nearly 7,000 square metres, continues to progress; a space that will be entirely dedicated to sport and the wellbeing of the public. The project, promoted by Barcelona d’Infraestructures Municipals (BIMSA) and designed by the firm AIA Barcelona, includes new swimming pools, fitness areas, rooms for group activities and communal spaces designed to become a community hub. This initiative represents a significant improvement for the neighbourhood’s well-being and reinforces the commitment to providing the city’s neighbourhoods with modern, accessible and high-quality public infrastructure.

The General Direction of Roads of the Ministry of Transport has officially proposed the joint venture formed by Sacyr and Papsa to carry out the works on the Jaca bypass, in the province of Huesca. This milestone officially confirms the award of what is positioned as the largest road contract of the year promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

The project involves the construction of a new section of motorway approximately 8 kilometres long, specifically designed to link the A-21 and the A-23, creating an alternative route to the Ebro corridor and diverting long-distance traffic that currently passes through the town centre. This major infrastructure project will help to significantly reduce journey times and ease congestion in the town centre of Jaca by avoiding speed-restricted sections and traffic-light junctions. The Ministry’s commitment sets the start of on-site works for next September, with the infrastructure expected to be fully completed by the end of 2031. With this contract award, Papsa consolidates its leadership in the civil engineering sector and in major transport infrastructure projects across the country.

The holding of this symposium coincides with a key moment for the city, following the City Council’s award of the new contract for the renewal and maintenance of public lighting to the LleidaLlum joint venture, formed by Romero Polo and Edison Next, for the next twelve years. This project builds on the management carried out by the joint venture over the last decade, a period during which 24,711 light points were already replaced, generating significant energy and cost savings. The new phase of the service involves the replacement of 14,545 streetlights with LED technology, the installation of 200 multisensors, 25 solar-powered streetlights and a remote control system to optimise management and reduce light pollution.

The project, recently completed, has transformed this iconic building in the Camps Elisis into a benchmark for sustainability and energy efficiency. The technical project has stood out for the installation of latest-generation glass of varying thicknesses and thermal properties adapted to the orientation of the façades, allowing for optimal insulation and eliminating heat and cold loss. Furthermore, an advanced building management system (BMS) has been implemented, enabling the digital monitoring and automation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning and lighting.

The renovation has not only modernised the structure and facilities, including the repair of the roof with photovoltaic panels, but has also restored a multi-purpose, digitalised facility to the city. This award reaffirms Romero Polo’s technical capability to lead highly complex projects that combine heritage preservation with the most demanding standards of efficiency and respect for the environment.

The technical works will be tailored to the specific needs of each carriageway to ensure the infrastructure’s maximum durability. On the slow lanes, where the impact of heavy traffic is greatest, deep milling of up to 30 centimetres and the complete replacement of the asphalt layers will be carried out, whilst on the rest of the section, surface rehabilitation will be undertaken to ensure a smooth and quiet ride. The works will be completed with the upgrading of slip roads, central reservation crossings, the replacement of joints in structures and the comprehensive renewal of road markings and signage.

This contract is part of the conservation and maintenance programme for the State Road Network and represents a strategic investment aimed at extending the service life of the North-East Motorway. Through this project, Romero Polo is reinforcing its commitment to improving key infrastructure across the region, applying advanced technical solutions that ensure optimal driving conditions on this vital stretch of road linking Madrid and Barcelona.

The joint venture, led by local firms Romero Polo and Sorigué alongside Dragados, will cover all phases of the construction project, from initial earthworks and site foundation to the building of structures, the installation of façades and roofs, and the interior fit-out of the complex. The project will culminate in an extensive landscaping phase, including the creation of car parks and the development of over 20,000 square metres of green spaces with the planting of nearly a thousand trees, ensuring the centre blends seamlessly into its surroundings.

Designed to strict energy efficiency standards, the new retail park will act as an economic driver for the region. It is estimated that during peak periods, the project will employ 300 workers simultaneously, with priority given to hiring local professionals and companies. Once operational by the end of 2027, the centre will generate 1,400 jobs, strengthening the city of Lleida’s leisure, hospitality and retail offering.

Technical innovation and circular materials

The solution features a multi-layer section, applicable to both roadways and sidewalks, integrating a high percentage of recycled materials, semi-warm asphalt mixes, and low-emission mortars. This approach aims to reduce the consumption of natural resources by 90% and CO2 emissions by 50%. RePavimenta incorporates circularity from the structural design phase to the total reuse of materials at the end of their life cycle, while also enhancing pavement durability and mitigating noise and temperature in urban environments.

Real-world validation and urban commitment

Following the start of the research phase in early 2026, the schedule anticipates conducting pilot tests on public roads between October 2026 and December 2027. Jaume Gasia, Head of R&D at Romero Polo, emphasizes that this project allows for the integration of sustainability and technical performance criteria from the design stage through to commissioning. With this initiative, Romero Polo reinforces its commitment to public-private partnerships to create more resilient and efficient infrastructures that contribute to citizen well-being.

The project, promoted by Ondina Logístics Lleida SL (Primafrío Group), is designed to strengthen large-scale cold storage and distribution, consolidating the province of Lleida as a crucial point on the map for international temperature-controlled freight transport. Romero Polo’s participation includes preliminary demolition work, earthworks, the installation of the water supply network, the new separate sewerage and storm drainage systems, the installation of LED street lighting, medium and low voltage networks, telecommunications and a complete irrigation network, as well as the pavement of roads and sidewalks.

One of the most notable technical elements of the project is the construction of a flood control pond. This hydraulic infrastructure is essential for sustainable water management, as it regulates the flow of rainwater during periods of heavy rainfall. Its function is to prevent the drainage network from becoming overloaded and to drastically reduce the risk of flooding in the area, thereby protecting future industrial facilities and the surrounding natural environment.

The urbanisation of this industrial sector represents a decisive boost for the economy of Segrià. Thanks to the provision of this first-class infrastructure, Romero Polo is contributing to the creation of a competitive environment that will attract investment, generate employment and strengthen the logistics fabric of the region.
